{"id":3106,"date":"2019-11-07T10:00:36","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T10:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/?p=3106"},"modified":"2019-11-06T20:54:27","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T20:54:27","slug":"flores-honored-for-community-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/index.php\/2019\/11\/07\/flores-honored-for-community-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Flores honored for community service"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dr. Manuel Flores was\nselected by the Texas Association for Bilingual Education as the Joe Bernal\nCommunity Service Honoree at the TABE conference earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to be recognized for your community service,\u201d\nFlores said. \u201cI felt very honored to be honored by the Texas Association of\nBilingual Educators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am very familiar with bilingual education; it\nstarted here,\u201d Flores continued. \u201cWe have the first bilingual education\ndoctorate here at A&amp;M Kingsville, we were the first ones. It was a result\nof the Chicano movement that was very strong here in Kingsville on campus. They\nasked to have a bilingual degree and we got it. State senator Carlos Truan he\npushed for this degree and we were the first in the state to really get a solid\nbilingual program that we have now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flores is familiar with the association and has given presentations\nfor them before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a big honor because this is a big state\nassociation and they only select people that they feel really deserve it\u201d he\nsaid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flores stressed the continual need for bilingual\neducation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBilingual education is still needed so from that\nstand I feel honored that this very busy association took the time to give me\nan award,\u201d Flores said. \u201cSome people thought there would be a time where\nbilingual education would just fade away, well it\u2019s not fading away and it\u2019s\nnot going to fade away anytime soon. It\u2019s just a tool to help certain students\nget over the fear of doing well in school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe Bernal was recognized in 2013 by the TABE for his\n\u201ccontributions to the implementation of educational policies that promote equal\neducational opportunity and academic excellence. Dr. Bernal, a San Antonio\nnative, has served as State Representative, State Senator, and as a member of\nthe Texas State Board of Education.
