{"id":3712,"date":"2020-03-24T00:45:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T00:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/?p=3712"},"modified":"2020-03-22T01:00:35","modified_gmt":"2020-03-22T01:00:35","slug":"dorms-during-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesouthtexan.com\/index.php\/2020\/03\/24\/dorms-during-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Dorms during COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>While the university is adapting to COVID-19 by\ntransitioning to online classes and cancelling events, the campus is not\ncompletely devoid of students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\nof March 17, 269 students still reside on campus. Preventative measures have\nbeen placed at the dorms by increasing the cleaning and wipe downs in the halls\nand updating cleaning products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With\nsafety in mind, TAMUK aims to provide students with a comfortable place to stay\nduring the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201c[It\u2019s beneficial] for those students from far\naway, work in town or need to leave their belongings here until there is a\nclearer picture of what is the best practice to prevent the spread of the\nCOVID-19 virus,\u201d Executive Director University Housing &amp; Residence Life\nThomas Martin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;For some\nstudents living in a dorm setting encourages them to focus on school and avoid\na lax mindset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA benefit of staying\nin the dorm is that I\u2019m still in a school environment and so with these online\nclasses I still have a space that can help me stay on track and it discourages\nme from thinking we are still on vacation,\u201d Erin Landin, animal science major, said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other\nstudents are benefiting from staying on campus financially, as they cannot\nafford to go home or have jobs in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that it\u2019s\ngreat [for campus to be open] because there are students who need the dorm for\nmore than just school. I stayed in the dorm over the break so I could work at\nmy second job,\u201d Victoria Trevino, agriculture education major, said.\u00ad\u00ad\u00ad<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Trinity University in San\nAntonio and other universities in Texas have announced that they will provide\nstudents with prorated reimbursement for their room and board, Texas\nA&amp;M-Kingsville has not decided on what action to take yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are waiting for the A&amp;M\nSystem to let us know what we can or cannot do.&nbsp;Once we know, we will\ncertainly make all our students aware of the options,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Money is tight for many college\nstudents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of students like myself can\u2019t afford to go back home once we\u2019ve already spent money on the dorm. Without a refund it\u2019ll be really hard to try to make up the money that we\u2019ve lost. I appreciate that they\u2019re letting us stay here and keeping open facilities for us to still use to ensure that our semester goes well and as planned,\u201d Landin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While the university is adapting to COVID-19 by transitioning to online classes and cancelling events, the campus is not completely devoid of students.
