In light of the recent outbreak of the\nCOVID-19 pandemic, TAMUK along with many other universities around the nation, have\nmade the transition to online learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the past week, professors and\nadministrators have been hard at work to ensure TAMUK students have all of the\nresources and information they need to succeed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\ncritical steps we are taking to ensure that our education meets TAMUK\u2019s\nstandards of excellence, is first and foremost, communication with students and\nfaculty, and between students and faculty,\u201d said Dr. Roberto Vela, department\nchair of Language and Literature. \u201cFaculty are submitting detailed descriptions\nof the changes they are making in their courses as we facilitate students with\na transition that guarantees that the core objectives of the courses are met.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The transition for\nsome professors has been easy and for others not so easy – whether because\ntheir class is very hands-on or that the digital realm of learning is new to\nthem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe (Dr.Vela) has\nbeen helping all us old dogs learn the new tricks we need to help our students\nsucceed,\u201d French Professor Dr. Jacqueline Thomas said. \u201cIt has been very\nstressful for me and quite overwhelming. Luckily he has quite a bit of\nexperience with online learning and is definitely more up-to-date on technology\nthan many of us.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI prefer\nface-to-face because there is a certain amount of energy that is generated in a\n\u2018real\u2019 classroom environment that cannot be replicated virtually, even if they\ncan see me. Interaction is okay via the different tools in Blackboard but it’s\njust not the same,\u201d professor Dr. Manuel Flores said. \u201cMost of my lessons are\nalready on Powerpoint and on Blackboard. I just had to make minor changes in\ninstruction of what to do…The\namount of work will be the same or similar. Like in the real-world classroom,\nstudents just have to do their work and produce.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
