Head coach Nicholson gets his 100th win, and schedule changes due to weather<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Softball is back\u00a0for the Javelinas this year, with two season opening matchups against San Angelo State and St. Mary\u2019sboth going in favor to\u00a0the Javelinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 4-2 victory over the Rambelles and\u00a0the 2-0 victory over the Rattlers not only\u00a0give the TAMUK ladies a 2-0 start to the season for the third consecutive season,\u00a0but it also gives reason to congratulate coach Craig Nichol- son on reaching the\u00a0100-win mark in his\u00a0tenure here as the head coach for the Lady Javelinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t even know honestly,\u201d Nicholson said of the 100th win. \u201cBut that just shows the direction this program is going\u00a0in. That many wins in four years and off the backend of a shortened COVID season, it says a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although nonchalant, Nicholson is\u00a0looking forward to more nights like these\u00a0to add to his win total and his team\u2019s over- all success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wins on Saturday night in San Antonio came off recent\u00a0Lone Star Conference\u00a0rankings that have the squad ranked fifth in the conference despite being stacked\u00a0with four All-LSC\u00a0first-team performers\u00a0and the dominance\u00a0of the 2019 campaign\u00a0not too far gone from memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the ranking is a bit suspect, pitcher Breanna Smith assures that it\u00a0won\u2019t make a difference, \u201cAs a team we didn\u2019t let it get to us\u00a0but instead we let it\u00a0motivate us to get\u00a0better and come out\u00a0on top.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team has the\u00a0goal of another cham-\u00a0pionship berth just like in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, due\u00a0to subfreezing temperatures across the\u00a0state of Arkansas, the McGhee-Hawkins Softball Invitational has been cancelled, scratching off five\u00a0games for the Lady Javelinas scheduled\u00a0for last weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was only a\u00a0weather issue and no COVID activity is responsible for the cancellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Nicolson is not phased however\u00a0by the cancellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe thing about\u00a0outdoor sports is we are used to weather and schedule changes being a factor.\u00a0Yeah, we had hopes\u00a0to play this week but we will make changes to keep ourselves\u00a0ready,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changes are already being set with\u00a0a matchup in the works against now ranked No. 1 Southern Arkansas Feb.\u00a018 in preparation for the Hampton Inn Classic the next day which will showcase\u00a0the softball team in\u00a0two games on Friday, two on Saturday, and\u00a0then a final game on\u00a0Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
