Gines’ final day as the Athletic Director was July 17, 2018. He began a new position at Delaware State University.

The search for the right candidate continued for a bit over a month.

Dennis Hawkins, the assistant athletic director for financial operations, has his own expectations for the new AD.

“An Athletic Director should create an environment that strengthens the student-athlete experience,” Hawkins said.

Javelina sports made a huge leap forward by bringing home multiple championships in the 2017-2018 season. The beach volleyball, baseball and track and field teams brought Javelina Nation heavy honors. Now, there is a tempo set for the new AD to pick up.

“An AD also has to know what it takes to build programs that are competing for championships. Winning is contagious and helps build the morale and brand of an Athletic Department,” Hawkins continued.

There is now a level of expectations because of Gines’ duties with Javelina Athletics.

According to Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information Jon Montoya, there will be an immediate comparison.

“At TAMUK, the comparison will come from what legacy was left behind by Gines and what expectations the new Athletic Director will have on the future of the department,” Montoya said.

The university has faced financial budget cuts this year that may impact the finances of the Athletic Department. But the department is adapting along with the changes.

“As a department, you have to make adjustments as you go whenever financial difficulties come about,” Hawkins said.

Randy Hughes, chief of staff, said the last candidate for consideration for the position was interviewed Friday, Aug. 23.

Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) began searching for a new Athletic Director (AD) immediately after the departure of David Gines.
