As you leave your hometown to start your college journey you may be getting your first car or are at least taking care of your car by yourself for the first time.\u00a0Having a car of your own is a great responsibility and privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No matter how careful you may be, or how well you take care of your car, accidents happen. We get distracted and sometimes just don\u2019t see things. Parking is a big deal on campus. We search for the perfect spot and sometimes try to squeeze into a spot our car may not fit in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It doesn\u2019t happen to everyone, but maybe it\u2019s happened to you.\u00a0Or maybe it hasn\u2019t but there may be a time when parking that you might accidentally hit a parked car. In that moment, you may be asking \u201cWhat do I do now?\u201d If this happens try to remain calm. You might be upset and that\u2019s okay, just be sure to not leave the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the owner of the car isn\u2019t around or you\u2019re unable to wait for them, here\u2019s what you need to do. Find a piece of paper, write your name, phone number, a statement of the accident and give them your insurance information or policy number. Only leave a note if you cannot wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you\u2019re able to wait, have all this information ready or even write it down to hand it directly to them. Failing to stop after hitting an unattended car or structure could result in a Class C or B misdemeanor depending on the cost of damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Accidents happen but it\u2019s important you know to wait for the owner, have your insurance information ready and remain calm. In most cases the damage isn\u2019t severe and easily fixable and most car owners and students will be understanding and be grateful you waited for them. However, if the accident is more severe and someone is in the car and is injured, leaving the scene could result in a felony depending on the severity of the injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
