Indoor volleyball at Rec concludes

As the semester ends, so does the activities and sports on campus, including the intramural sports of the Recreation Center at Texas A&M University- Kingsville (TAMUK). The league just wrapped up its Indoor Volleyball intramurals for the Fall semester. There were four divisions and with each division there were games hosted to select champions. The majority of the championships happened last Friday at the Recreation Center.

The intramural league divisions are Co-Rec Blue, Co-Rec Gold, Women and Men. For the Co-Rec Blue and women divisions, the team “RoughRiders” took the championship title. For the Co-Rec Gold the team “Practice Safe Sets” took the championship title. Lastly, the Men’s team “Bump N’ Grind” took the title for their division.

The Volleyball program has been in growing popularity and as a response to that, the Recreation Center at TAMUK had to host more games and leagues for the participants.

“It gets people out, it makes friends and keeps us fit. It’s fun being with people who are better than you because you get to learn. Freshman year I don’t think there was a lot of intramural volleyball [being played] so it is more in demand here now,” said Brandi Fruge, a sophomore and Animal science Major at TAMUK.

The participants seem to be enjoying themselves and building friendships along the way.

“I have about four or five friends on the team I came to watch. They enjoy it and give advice to each other. For example, one of the guys, Jeff, helps me out with learning how to set properly,” Fruge said.

Other participants like Jerome Steinmetz, a business administration major, found the competition motivating.

“I came in tonight for my game at 7 but I’m here early to warm up and get a look at the other teams. I like playing intramural volleyball; it’s fun and challenging. Having the volleyball tournaments gives you a reason to communicate with others and compete. The competition motivates people to play,” Steinmetz said.

According to IMLeagues.com that was it for the year and the Indoor intramural Volleyball teams will pick back up next Fall.
