Dress to impress at Spring Career Fair

Texas A&M University-Kingsville will host an All Major Career Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Memorial Student Union Building Ballrooms for students looking for their first job upon graduation.

“Students should come to the Career Fair with multiple copies of their resume, which should be updated, proofread and error-free,” Acting Director of Career Services Henry Burgos said.

“Resumes and portfolios should be reviewed prior to the Career Fair by the Career Services Team,” Burgos said, “to schedule an appointment with staff, please email CareerServices@tamuk.edu or call 361-593-2217.”

Business casual attire is recommended for students. Students should “dress to impress as if meeting with employers in an interview” Career Advisor Deborah Levensailor said.

“However, we strongly encourage that students use professional attire,” Burgos said. “Some employers will interview students during the Career Fair, and knowing that first impressions leave a lasting impression, we strongly encourage students to dress in suits.

“The recommended attire is always conservative,” he said.

Burgos also recommends students pick neutral colors like black, blue and gray avoiding bright shades.

“Students should expect to meet and network with over 50 employers to explore all available internships and job opportunities,” Burgos said.

“Companies such as Citgo, Ernst & Young, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Coastal Plains and Texas Department of Family and Protective Services will be in attendance.”

Students should research the companies in attendance and can find a full list of employers on Handshake under the events tab.

It’s recommended students prepare a 30 second or less elevator pitch stating their name, class year, major, relevant experience, and why they are a strong candidate for the job while highlighting their knowledge of the company. Students can find more information on the Career Fair Checklist.

“Students can attend anytime during the hours of the fair,” Levensailor said.

“There will be a check-in table for them to sign in and pick up a map of employers to know where each booth is located.”

Don’t have professional attire? No problem.

“Students in need of professional clothing should contact Career Services to visit our Professional Suit Closet,” Burgos said. “Students can borrow suits, ties, dress shirts and belts.”

The suit closet is located in Eckhardt Hall and students can find a list of sizes online at  http://www.tamuk.edu/studentsuccess/csc/services/suit.html

For more information, students can call Career Services at 361-593-2217 to schedule their visit.
