Javelinas set program record with 96-62 victory over the Dustdevils

The TAMUK men’s basketball team scored a season-high 96 points and recorded their 14th conference win of the season Saturday night against the Dustdevils of Texas A&M International University (TAMIU). The 96-62 beating set the program record for most conference wins in a season.

The Javelinas kicked off the contest with a five-point run, but the visitors responded with five unanswered points of their own. This 5-5 tie would be the only tie of the night and as close as the Dustdevils would come to a lead.

TAMIU was down one around the 13 and a-half minute mark, but the home team took off on a 9-3 run, extending their lead to 23-16. The Dustdevils scored five of the next seven, slicing their deficit to four, but the Blue and Gold answered with eight unanswered points to extend their lead to 33-21.

The last 10 points of the half were split evenly, sending TAMUK into the locker room holding a 38-26 advantage.

TAMUK wasted no time getting to work in the second half, outscoring the Dustdevils 10-0. The ten-point run created a 22-point chasm that the visitors could not crawl out of.

TAMUK kept the pressure on, not allowing TAMIU to come any closer than 19. The last ten minutes of regulation saw eight different Javelinas contribute to the stifling of any comeback hopes.

Five Javelinas hit double-digits in the scoring column. Rashon Thomas led the home team’s offensive attack with 18 points. Flowers was just one bucket behind with 16, and senior Chauncey Thomas was one field goal behind Flowers with 14. John Guerra scored 11 and sophomore Will Chayer put up 10. Chayer also pulled down 10 rebounds, posting his first career double-double.

The Blue and Gold will make their way to San Angelo on Thursday, February 20 to take on LSC-foe Angelo State. Two days later they will head north for Lubbock to take on the Lubbock Christian Chaps.
