Lake’s dedication recognized

Golfer earned academic, athletic titles Spring 2020

Student-athletes are expected to serve as leaders in all aspects of life. While managing classwork and excelling in their field of competition, TAMUK athletes continue to defy the odds.

Madison Lake, a Victoria native, has proven nothing less than dedication and commitment to the TAMUK women’s golf program over the last four years. Lake has earned multiple academic and athletic titles which showcase her success.

Lake was named a recipient of the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award, the Lone Star Conference Commissioners Honor Roll, Women’s Golf Coaches All American Scholar, and Honor Roll for 2020 spring semester.

Every season involves more energy and fire than the last. Lake expresses her desire to compete and practice every day like it is her last.

“Texas A&M Kingsville is such an awesome campus which provides a lot of support for students like myself,” Lake said. “Coach Maynard has made such a huge impact on my golf career and is a very genuine, competitive person who always pushes her athletes to succeed.”

“It feels really good to be recognized for my hard work,” Lake continued. “I am very focused on my academics and sometimes it is not always easy to juggle practices, tournaments and classwork. I am so grateful.”

Katie Habib, TAMUK golfer, feels inspired through the actions and efforts Lake puts forth on the green.

“Madi always shows great leadership and is always stepping up to help others,” Habib said. “She is extremely competitive; it makes the game so much more interesting and fun to play. She is an outstanding teammate and an even better friend.”

The women’s golf program looks forward to yet another season, this year being very different.

Stefanie Maynard, head women’s golf coach, has this message for her athletes.

“We need to have a lot of patience. We live by the hashtag ‘fortitude,’” Coach Maynard told Javelina Athletics. “We need to stay focused and mentally prepared for what life throws at you.”With the challenges of COVID-19 still in effect, the women’s golf team still remains anxious to begin competition.

Lake will battle out in her final season representing the blue and gold.
