Javelina Golf preparing to compete twice in the fall

KINGSVILLE, Texas – After receiving the green light for fall competition, coach Stefanie Maynard has announced a fall schedule for the Javelina women’s golf team and it consists of two tournaments, both of which will be played in October.

“It was a huge relief that we’re going to be allowed to compete,” said Maynard. “It’s been six months since our last tournament so the girls are really excited. These are going to be two really solid events where the field is going to be really strong.”

Both events will be held on courses TAMUK was scheduled to visit in 2019-20, although they were only able to visit one before their year was cut short. The two tournaments are each being hosted by schools in the Lone Star Conference.

The Javelinas’ first destination will be Lawton, Okla. for the 2020 Oklahoma Intercollegiate, where they’ll play 36 holes on Oct. 12th at the Lawton Country Club. In the 2019 edition of this event, the Blue and Gold posted a first-round 299, their best 18-hole score during Maynard’s tenure. TAMUK finished the tournament tied for third, led by then-junior Madison Lake (Victoria, Texas), who achieved a career-best by taking second-place. Senior Kristina Gutierrez (Laredo, Texas) took fourth in this tournament as a freshman in 2017.

“The girls are excited to get back to that tournament,” said Maynard. “They played really well there and we’ve had some success at that event. It will also help us dive back in.”

On Oct. 26th – 27th, the Javs will be in Arlington, Texas for the 2020 Lion Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce at the Texas Rangers Golf Club. This will mark TAMUK’s first-ever tournament on this course, which was originally scheduled to host the 2020 Lone Star Conference Championships before that event was cancelled in March. It’s also the latest TAMUK has competed in the fall since 2014, when they took part in the Abilene Intercollegiate on Oct. 27th – 28th.

“This course has only open maybe a year or two,” said Maynard, “so I’ve never seen it. I’ve seen pictures of it and it looks awesome. I’m excited to see it. It will give us a little bit of preview because [the] conference [tournament] is supposed to be there again in April.
