Javelina Camp opens registration

OSA to host Javelina Camp for incoming freshmen

Each year, Texas A&M University-Kingsville sends out acceptance letters to graduating high school seniors who will attend the university the following fall semester. To get these incoming freshmen familiar with campus and to help them learn leadership skills and make connections, the Office of Student Activities oversees the high intense, annual three-day Javelina Camp.

“[Attending] this camp gives incoming freshmen leadership skills as well as connections that can support them as they transition to college,” Joseph Cruz, a newfound pack member of Javelina Camp, said.

Despite challenges faced last year because of COVID-19, this years’ camp will be held in-person on campus Aug. 10 to 13.

Registration for the camp opened May 3 and has a fee of $100 which students can pay through Money Connect.

During camp, students will be able to move into their dorms early, explore the campus, learn about the campus’ traditions and get to know other students.

These students will also be given the opportunity to participate in various bonding activities and other ice breakers in hopes of creating friendships between incoming students and their peers as they transition into their first year of college.

Students who attend this camp will also be given an opportunity to spend time in small groups called “packs” with their leaders and focus on connecting with other students, participate in team games and challenges and have fun with other future Javelinas.

“Javelina Camp helps students become prepared and comfortable for the start of the school year,” pack leader Julia Gonzales said.

“Attending this event is a great way to ease the incoming freshmen into college.”

Throughout the three-day camp, incoming freshmen will be placed in groups with two pack leaders in each group. Together, the pack members answer questions, give advice and act as a mentor for the students.

Students at TAMUK sign up to be pack leaders and volunteer during the camp, as well as leading it.

“[The Office of Student Activities] usually announce applications for pack leaders during the second semester of the year, and by the end of the year pack leaders for Javelina Camp are chosen,” pack leader Sirrianda Mbianda said.
