Review: Halloween Kills

Anticipated, anticlimactic, all around disappointing

As a horror fan, Halloween Kills was one of the movies I had been waiting to watch and I finally got the opportunity to do so.

The movie starts off moments after the 2018 Halloween movie. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter, Allyson (Andi Matichak) think they got rid of Michael Myers until they hear he survived and is killing people again. Thus, the terror continues.

This movie has a few nostalgic touches. We take a trip down memory lane and watch old scenes from the first Halloween movie made in 1978.

We see old characters like Officer Hawkins, Lindsey the babysitter, Tommy Doyle and more make a comeback.

What do these characters have in common? They all survived the boogeyman’s attacks.

Now, inspired by Strode, the residents of Haddonfield, Ill., team up to put an end to Myers once and for all.

However, if you have seen any of the other Halloween movies before, you know it does not end that way at all.

I was excited to watch this movie; it was all I talked about for weeks. To say I was disappointed after I watched it would be an understatement.

I understand that focus on teamwork within the community was a major theme in the movie. However, it still felt like it strayed from its original purpose, which was for Michael Myers to get rid of his bloodline, especially Laurie. In this movie, Myers killed almost everyone but Laurie.

It was mentioned a couple of times that he was headed to the hospital where Laurie was, but never made it as he was preoccupied with the residents.

I was upset with how quickly some of the main characters died. They survived 40 years of terror just to die so easily?

Their deaths were caused by a slip up, a careless mistake they could have prevented given their experience. Again, upset.

Make no mistake, the movie was not bad, but it could have been better. It pains me to say it, but to me, it felt like a last-minute project. Like the directors were just piecing random scenes together until they met their hour mark.

Like the other movies, this one satisfies all gore lovers as they get to see the ways in which Myers murders his victims. The creators of this movie really meant what they said in the title.

Spoiler ahead, we actually get to put a face to the name!

While trying to get Michael to not kill her daughter, Karen removes Michael’s mask, this does the trick.

After 40 years, we finally got to see what Michael looks like. This does not last long, Michael ends up getting his mask back but it was fun while it lasted

The end scene hints at another movie to come, but let’s just hope the next movie is better than this one.
