Rec hosts E-sports tournament

Mario Cart, Smash Bros, more contests

Javelina students had the opportunity to slide into a new virtual reality as they competed in the first Mario Cart tournament hosted by the Student Recreational Center’s gaming lounge.

This gave students the opportunity to show off their gaming abilities as they competed against one another for the winning prize of $200, $50 or $25 in Aramark credit which can be used anywhere on campus.

The winners of the tournament were able to take home these prizes if they placed in the top three.

“I honestly didn’t expect to get first place because there was some really great competition in the tournament, but I was pretty happy that I got first,” first place winner Bryan Hernandez said.

The Rec Center hopes to engage students to get involved with on-campus activities by hosting events like these and give students the opportunity to mingle with one another.

“I think it’s good for the campus and the gaming lounge to have these types of events because it brings people together who love and enjoy playing video games so everyone can come to have laughs and enjoy themselves with friends,” student Jonathan Serna said.

Students enjoyed having the chance to compete and are excited about future E-sport activities being offered in semesters to come.

Students who would like to enter or are interested in competing in the next gaming tournament, can contact the Student Rec Center gaming lounge for more information on how to sign up and enter into competition.

The next few E-Sport competitions being held will include Mortal Kombat on Oct. 13, the second round of Mario Cart on Oct. 27 and Smash Bros Ultimate on Nov. 10.

All tournaments will be starting at 7 p.m. at the gaming lounge.
