Javelina Homecoming: 2023 Edition

A preview of  TAMUK homecoming events

October is here and with a new month comes a new variety of campus activities.

Homecoming is the biggest week of the month. Every year the week is filled with fun activities such as a concert, which will see Stoney LaRue performing at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, at Mesquite Grove.

This will be a free event open to both students and staff as well as members of the community. Aside from the concert other key events to look forward to will be various activities organizations will be hosting as the week progresses.

This year to start off the week there will be a DIY spirit mums event starting at 11 a.m., Oct. 9 at the pavilion.

Later that day at 6 p.m. there will be the annual homecoming parade which will go through campus starting in front of College Hall and finishing in front of the gym, which is where the Javelina Madness will take place at 7 p.m.

In the days that follow, other events such as a movie night with actor Lucas Grabeel is set for 7 p.m., Oct. 10 at Jones Auditorium and from 5 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 11 Fall Carnival will be held on University Boulevard.

The carnival features a variety of different booths by different organizations on campus.

One organization that hopes to make a big impact at the carnival is Delta Sigma Pi (DSP).

“We have been growing this year and we are fundraising for conferences and other events we have planned, and this year we will be selling marrandas and we are definitely looking forward to it,” DSP chancellor Dayacelly Garcia said.

Another organization is the sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA). One major thing they hope in accomplishing is having more interactive activities.

“We hope to get our name out there by spreading awareness for our organization,” Jackie McClendon said.

“We will be selling candy apples to raise money for our philanthropies, and we are expecting this year to be very busy.”

A club that will also be in attendance will be the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS). This club is fairly new at TAMUK and aims to showcase themselves and get students interested and involved.

“In comparison to last year, we are going a different approach by selling some newer items that’ll attract more sales and people to our booth,” MANRRS president Gabriella Ruiz said.

Their hopes are that a bigger turnout this year will not only attract new members but bring in more funding as they are still a small and young club with limited sources.

As homecoming week begins to wind down, the grand finale takes the stage. On Friday, Oct. 13, the Javelina Volleyball team will host Dallas Baptist University at 7 p.m. at the SPEC building.

The following evening 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, the Javelinas host the Angelo State Rams in a Lone Star Conference showdown.
