students meet counselors

Texas A&M University Kingsville (TAMUK) hosted its first counseling services event in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month at which students had the opportunity to meet the counselors helping with the mental health of the student body.

“I think that mental health is a topic that we need to talk about every day no matter your culture. I would love to hear back from students that attended as to how we can make it better,” Dr. Renee E. Weiss, director of counseling services, said. “It’s all about the students and the student body and making sure that you’re successful here at TAMUK.”

This event has been in the works since students suggested that they would like to have more in person events featuring counselors. TAMUK’s Student Counseling Services answered by having an event at which Javelinas were given the chance to converse with them through a more casual environment and allowing them to put a face to a name by introducing themselves to their student audience.

“I think they got to know us and see that we are just common people and that we just want to help and have a conversation and let them know that we are there to help,” Professional Counselor Cynthia Garza said.

The counseling services promote the growth of students with its wide range of free and confidential personal, psychological, academic and career counseling. From massage chairs to in-person therapy sessions, from PhD professors to student interns, TAMUK Student Counseling Services invites you to relax and remind you that your mental health matters just as much as your physical health.

“If anybody might need any sort of counseling or maybe you just want to relax, we have a relaxing moment room to offer to all students whether they want to de-stress or just have a moment to themselves we have those services for you,” student intern Alex Alvarado said.
