Review: NBA 2K23 shoots, misses the opprotunity

This latest installment is great to play with friends

The latest installment of the NBA 2K game series, NBA 2K23, has been released, and in my opinion is not bad at all, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Although the game can be inconsistent at times with terrible latency, the ability to play the game with friends across all platforms makes it worthwhile.

This year’s game is much more skill-based, as shooting in the city/neighborhood is green or miss, so if you don’t know your jump shot timing then you are going to have a very rough time. Apart from the brand-new beach-themed city, the best addition to this year’s game is undoubtedly the implication of cross-play. For many years NBA 2K players have been longing for the ability to play with their friends who may be playing on a different console, and with the addition of cross-play Xbox and PlayStation players can now play together. Cross-play is an awesome feature, but this amazing feature could very well be the main reason that there are so many lag and latency issues.

One of the biggest issues with this game is the amount of VC it takes to upgrade your build, every year it seems that upgrading your builds gets more and more expensive, but this year is most definitely the worst that I’ve ever seen in my seven years of playing NBA 2K. There are several other issues regarding the gameplay quality, which after so many updates makes this version lackluster in comparison to previous releases. There is a lot of areas where the game should be improved, but if you’re a longtime fan of NBA 2K the updates and addition of cross play is well worth the money, and makes the game more enjoyable.
