Review: A new musical of epic proportions

Greek musical saga continues

In 2021, Jorge Rivera-Herrans became popular for posting small fragments of his still unfinished musical on TikTok. The musical is titled “EPIC: The Musical” and it correlates to “The Odyssey” by Homer, a Greek poet. The musical tells the story of Odysseus, through Herrans canon, where he is the king of Ithaca and is called by Menelaus to help rescue Helen from Troy. From there the story begins, telling his journey of a 10 year-long adventure.

There have only been two sagas released for the audience to hear so far. The names given are called “Troy” and “Cyclops.” Troy starts with Odysseus and his crew storming Troy, as well as name dropping other famous Greek heroes. After storming Troy, the men are sent back home to their families with the evil ahead of them to keep them on their toes.

The musical has a variety of genres when it comes to the music being composed but it definitely keeps you hyped and interested as the story unfolds. The musical is said to be the up-and-coming rival of the famous “Hamilton” by Lin Manuel Miranda given that Herrans is also from Puerto Rico, casted himself as the lead singer (Odysseus), and is based on a historical story.

Many are interested in what will come of the musical once it is finished and performed on Broadway. I personally think the musical should have more attraction towards the younger audiences and should stay tuned for more sagas to come.
