Review: Cyberpunk 2077 game goes from failure to triumph

Gaming comeback of the decade

On Dec. 10, 2020, video game developer CD Projekt Red (CDPR) released one of the most anticipated games video games of the decade “Cyberpunk 2077.”

Following the massive amount of hype for the game, the gaming world was turned upside down when “Cyberpunk 2077” launched with mixed reviews and a variety of technical issues making the game unplayable to some players.

However, CDPR did not give up on the state of the game. They continued to fix the technical errors and update the game with new content. Things started to shift positively for “Cyberpunk 2077” when Netflix premiered “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” an anime series animated by Japanese Studio Trigger under the supervision of CD Projekt.

The anime series is based on “Cyberpunk 2077” and received high praise from critics and audiences everywhere, resulting in fans revisiting the game and being able to appreciate a more complete experience.

On Sept. 26 earlier this year, CDPR released “Phantom Liberty” an expansion to “Cyberpunk 2077” featuring Idris Elba (“The Suicide Squad” and “The Wire”) to play a prominent role in the expansion’s story.

Along with “Phantom Liberty” CDPR released the games 2.0 update which brought massive changes to the base game, making the gameplay feel like a breath of fresh air to both new and returning players.

Both “Phantom Liberty” and the 2.0 update were received well from both critics and fans, even bringing an abundance of new players to adventure the in-game world of Night City.

“Cyberpunk 2077’s” journey from launch to redemption has left a permanent mark on the gaming industry. It serves as a cautionary tale about the challenges of developing ambitious titles and the expectations that come with them. CDPR’s commitment to addressing issues and delivering a quality product showcased the studio’s dedication to its player base.
