Black History Month honorees

Gabrielle Vaughn

Currently serving as a Senior Coordinator of Intercultural Engagement at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Gabrielle plays a pivotal role in creating inclusive programming and fostering intentional partnerships. Her dedication to providing a diverse higher education experience is reflected in her day-to-day efforts to enrich the university community through a variety of initiatives, such as the celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, Women’s Resource and Empowerment Network, Miss TAMUK Scholarship Pageant, departmental collaborations, and overseeing the guidance and development of the university’s student organizations.

Gabrielle actively engages with internal and external professional associations to stay connected with the broader higher education community.  She is a valued executive member of Staff Council at TAMUK, holding the position of Member at Large. She currently serves as the Director of Marketing for the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators and actively participates in Texas Women in Higher Education (TWHE), serving on the 2024 planning committee.

This December, Gabrielle is set to be licensed as an LMSW and receive her Master of Social Work degree from her alma mater, Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Christopher Graveley-Rosado

Christopher is a recent graduate holding a B.S. in Kinesiology from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. His commitment extended beyond the academic realm, encompassing both voluntary involvement and a structured internship. Additionally, he actively participated in the university community as a distinguished member of the Black Student Union (BSU) and the Student Government Association (SGA) throughout his  undergraduate career. 

Christopher’s  academic journey has equipped him with many tools needed to become a valuable asset to any company, and is now in pursuit of a rewarding career in Houston, Texas. As he embark on this professional endeavor, he is concurrently planning to pursue a Master’s degree, aiming to deepen his expertise and contribute further to the field.

Christopher said: I am honored to be considered for this award, and I believe my academic achievements, coupled with my extensive involvement in extracurricular activities, exemplify my dedication to excellence and passion for greatness. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and remain committed to making a lasting impact in the field through continuous learning and dedicated service.

Remi Yusuf

Remi attended Texas A&M Kingsville where he received a full basketball scholarship and attained his Bachelor’s in Social Work along with a double minor in Sociology and Psychology. He is also certified in Special Education in the State of Texas.

Proceeding college, Remi attended Pre-Draft workouts with the Houston Rockets but went on to play internationally to further develop his skill set. He played in Colombia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, played on two different teams in Eastern Europe, Slovakia and was eventually signed by the Houston Rockets in September of 2015,  but was later on released.

Remi has a passion for youth and young adults and created an organization called “Be A 9th Wonder Foundation.” Their mission is to develop global citizens by investing in the youth through education, mentorship, life skills training and sports skill development for the underserved community, while their vison is to create an inclusive culture for the youth fostering hope, perseverance, and self confidence in their everyday lives. 9th Wonder is established in Houston and in Australia.

Keenan Woods

Keenan Woods, a proud son of Houston, Texas, brings the heart and resilience of his hometown to every aspect of his life.  As an only child, Keenan cultivated an unwavering drive and determination from an early age.  Securing athletic scholarships to Tyler Junior College, Keenan excelled both on the field and in the classroom, earning an Associates of Arts Degree. His dedication and skill set the stage for the next chapter of his athletic and academic journey. Moving forward to Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Keenan made an indelible mark as a key player for the Javelina Football program from 2010-2012, displaying his talent and leadership serving as a starter on the offensive line in over 30 games.

Yet, his ambition did not stop at the gridiron.  Mr. Woods is a two-time alum of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 2012. His unwavering passion for education led him to further his studies, earning a Master’s Degree in Education Administration in 2015. Keenan Woods embodies the concepts of resilient, driven, and constantly striving for greatness. His achievements in both sports and education prove his persistent determination and dedication to success. Mr. Woods has always exemplified a personal stake in serving this community.  As a member of Javelina athletics he committed to several hours of park clean ups, delivering toys to children, and supporting local youth organizations. Currently, Mr. Woods serves on the Board of Directors for the City of Kingsville Chamber of Commerce. This organization is charged with identifying opportunities for economic and commercial growth for the community.
