Students learn about financial responsibility

Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) hosted its  first financial literacy session. Students were given the opportunity to learn about the importance of learning how to handle your finances.

The Center for Student Success (CFSS) worked together to create an event at which students learned about credit, investments, budgeting and more.

“I hope that [the students] will come out with some kind of idea of what they can do to benefit themselves. Whether it is ok let’s get started on my credit or maybe I do want to invest in something,” Freshman Academic Advisor Gina Merzbacher said.

CFSS also brought in a guest speaker that had experience in the field of managing money. Kendall Huey, a TAMUK alumnus, is a frequent guest for many classes and events that teaches students about the importance of financial literacy.

“I just want kids to understand why it’s important to have a credit score, how to build it, how to maintain it, and how to read a credit report, because I know 12 years ago when I graduated college I didn’t know the first thing about my credit score,” Huey said. “I am glad that they are doing this now for these kids.”

The event was held in the MSUB Ballroom on the second floor.

Students of all majors were there to see what they could learn and how they can incorporate financial literacy into their lives.

“Honestly, I think people should just go for it [and attend events], especially here on campus. You get to branch out, meet new people,” Sophomore Michael De Leon said.
