A glance into the world of the ‘CJM’ podcast

Building the bond of the trio with sports

Communication/Journalism Majors Chistopher Olivares, Jacob Daniels, and Matthew Roberts are three friends who met not too long ago. Even in the time of knowing each other their friendship and bond have grown closer and stronger over this short period of time. A major contributor to that being their sports podcast called “The CJM Podcast”.

“We had just really started becoming friends, me and Jake, and he said, ‘Well I want to do a podcast If you guys are down. If you guys are into sports’, and I said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to do a podcast with you bro’’’, Matthew said, “It was random because someone said Chris was into sports and he said ‘Yea dude I’m into sports I’d love to be in the podcast’ and as a group we said screw it let’s do a podcast.”

The group is now on Episode 10, their show airs every Friday at 5 p.m. on Spotify, and on Saturday at 6 p.m. on the radio.

Even though they have busy schedules they still find time to keep up with their show. As Co-Editor and Chief Chris said, “Well I wish I could say it’s easy but it’s really not. I mean especially on deadline and stuff too here at the office. I have to balance both laying out the page as well as recording in the booth”, Chris said, “Another thing too is to make sure there’s a bunch of newsworthy stuff to say during the podcast.”

The group talks about a variety of sports ranging from the NFL to the MLB and to the UFC Fight Nights. Jacob said, “Chris and Matt are great. I think each one of them brings their own little pizzazz to the table, you know. I think Chris is super analytical and he really brings a factor to our little group that I don’t think myself or Matt do, and he loves the UFL so that adds a little something to it.” Jacob continues saying, “I feel like Matt is really good at bringing some funny quotes to the team. Whether he’s getting something wrong or just being funny in general and he loves the UFC. So, I think each one of us have our own thing. I think mine is probably baseball, so we all have something to kind of bring to the table.”

Having the opportunity the group has to have a podcast means a lot to them. Olivarez says, “It feels pretty good. This has been something I’ve been wanting to do since my senior year of high school. I actually tried starting my own podcast but it didn’t work out… Then of course fast forward a couple years I meet Jake and Matt. We all had mutual interest to start a podcast and he hit the ground running with it.”

Jacob says, “I love talking sports and I felt like I could talk anyone’s ear off about sports. So, I figured why yap to just yap when I could get on the mic and voice my opinions.”

Matt ends off saying, “It’s awesome dude. We mentioned it in one of our episodes that it’s a blessing to be able to do what we do, and to have a platform to talk about what we love. I love sports. A lot of people don’t like watching professional sports, but I love it. It gives me something to do and the fact that I have an outlet to talk about it and be able to entertain people the way I like to do. It’s something awesome to do.”
