2026 awards season around the corner

Nominees are in and hype is up

With the spring semester kicking back into full gear, it comes with some of my favorite entertainment nights of the year: award show season! From the messiest unexpected moments on stage to judging dazzling outfits from our couches, it’s tradition to keep up with this time of year. Most of Hollywood’s most iconic nights come early in the year, so roll out those red carpets and get out your camera because competition is heavy!

Starting off strong with the Grammys on Feb. 1, we all know Album of the Year is arguably the biggest award of the night. The nominees for that category include Bad Bunny, Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, Clipse, Pusha T & Malice, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Leon Thomas and Tyler, The Creator. My biased answer is that the Grammy goes to either Carpenter for “Man’s Best Friend,” Gaga for “Mayhem” or Kendrick for “GNX.” Based on other predictions, it looks like the award is between Bad Bunny and Lady Gaga due to high streaming numbers.

Record of the Year is packed with hits of different genres. Nominees include “DtMF” by Bad Bunny, “Manchild” by Sabrina Carpenter, “Anxiety” by Doechii, “Wildflower” by Billie Eilish, “Abracadabra” by Lady Gaga, “Luther” by Kendrick Lamar With SZA, “The Subway” by Chappell Roan and finally, “APT.” by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars. I personally feel that this award is between Bad Bunny, Carpenter, Gaga and Lamar. Although, “APT.” was streamed a lot especially by sticky handed Ipad kids, so it might have potential to clear the board here. “The Subway” is another personal favorite but I would consider it more of a “niche” Record of the Year since we spent months begging Chappell to officially release it. I would also love to see Eilish get a win since her album didn’t get recognition at the last Grammys; Record of the Year would look good on “Wildflower.”

Moving on to the Oscars on March 15, there are a lot of movies that are nominated for Best Picture. Personally, I think the Oscar for Best Picture is between a handful of movies that have been successful at the other award shows. “One Battle After Another” swept the Golden Globes this year so it definitely has a lot of potential. “Sinners” was definitely a fan favorite within the past year and it has some crazy visuals that could win. “Frankenstein” was another fan favorite that was highly praised for its cinematography so it could win either or both categories for that. “Hamnet” has been doing well on the award side of things also and also has stunning visuals.

As for Actor in a Leading Role, Timothée Chalamet and Wagner Moura won this category at the Golden Globes, but I think Michael B. Jordan might have a shot for this award because of his performance in the movie “Sinners.” For Actress in a Leading Role, Jessie Buckley’s performance in Hamnet stands out to me and she also won this category at the Golden Globes.  Keeping up with your music and movies really has its perks when it comes to award show season. So, everybody place your bets and settle in to see who comes out on top.
