Military usage of Artificial Intelligence

The United States military is actively integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate decision-making, enhance intelligence analysis, and automate targeting to shift from traditional surveillance to AI-driven combat operations.

Many of these AI integration approaches aim at shortening the “kill chain,” the time it takes to detect, track and strike a target.

The nation’s Department of Defense recently had a dispute over the deployment of AI technology from tech company Anthropic.

Anthropic wanted to prohibit the use of its AI model “Claude” in weapons that can identify and fire on targets without human input (fully autonomous weapons).

The U.S. military has reportedly used “Claude” in its attack on Venezuela.

Anthropic expressed great concerns over the potential misuse of its products to “spy” on Americans by analyzing citizens location records and financial information.

We, the staff of The South Texan, are not saying that any or all use of AI in the military would be a bad thing.

Building large scale language models to feed generative AI for weather and terrain analysis does not seem so malicious.

Large language models could assist in developing products and reports to aid a commander’s decision-making.

AI could analyze massive datasets in real-time, producing more accurate battlefield decisions and reducing the “fog of war.”

However, when would the risks associated with deploying AI across the military begin to exceed its benefits?

AI usage in the military could introduce ethical issues, algorithmic biases, high unpredictability and severe security vulnerabilities.

These AI-driven systems could accidentally accelerate conflict escalation or lead to accidental civilian casualties.

We believe that if the usage and integration of AI in military defense operations is inevitably unavoidable, then perhaps the process of incorporating such software with the possibility of malfeasance should be handled with precautionary measures to safeguard us from our own demise.

What will the future hold with the usage of AI not just personally but within the paramaters of global warfare?

Only the future of our leadership will tell.
