Review: Netflix’s Love Hard is the perfect holiday movie

A must watch for all rom-com, Christmas lovers

Have you ever had the debate of whether Love Actually or Die Hard is the best Christmas movie? Well Netflix’s new movie, Love Hard might just help you with that.

The streaming service’s new movie debuted at the beginning of November pleasing not only Rom-Com fans but comedy fans in general. The film starts with Natalie, an L.A. writer who yearns to find her perfect match through online dating.

After experiencing several terrible dates and writing about them, she soon eventually matches with a man named Josh who seems to be the perfect match. Due to the holidays and falling hard for Josh, Natalie makes a drastic decision to fly 3,000 miles to surprise him for Christmas.

Unfortunately for Natalie, things are not always what they seem when she finds out the Josh she was talking to may have been real but his profile picture most certainly was not. Reluctantly, Natalie makes a deal with Josh to be his girlfriend for the holiday if he helps her get with Tag, the real man from the photo who happens to be Josh’s childhood friend.

As Natalie gets to know both Tag and Josh more during this eventful holiday season, she may just realize who is more suitable for her than she thought before.

While this movie is a cheesy rom-com, there are a few good things about it that I quite liked. Aside from all the lovey dovey aspects within the film, there are quite a few funny and relatable scenes that make it worth watching.

While the lead, Nina Dobrev, contributes to the comedy taking place, I would have to say Josh, who is played by stand-up comedian Jimmy O. Yang, took the cake.

It was refreshing to see an actual comedian take the role instead of the cookie-cutter rom-com actors that are usually cast.

It can be also said the story was refreshing as it is a plot that we have not seen in a while with a bit of a twist. Most romantic film plots are too outrageous and feel too unrealistic. But with Love Hard, it almost seemed like a comfort film as it was not only realistic but modern and relatable.

One aspect that I believe adds to the comfort of this film is the setting which was in a small town.

In doing so, you were able to feel the closeness of not only Josh’s crazy family but how close everyone in the town is as well.

Another aspect I like and have mentioned before is how relatable the plot is as we live in a world of dating online and catfishing.

It is such a realistic scenario that can happen to anyone yet it shows different ways that catfishing can happen besides just having a different profile picture online.

The whole cast was great but Yang really shined and owned the screen.

His performance was comedic yet heartfelt gold which is a tough balance to find. Maybe this will be a wakeup call to casting directors to cast masters of their craft and not just a pretty face.

If you would like to see this romantic comedy, you can stream it on Netflix now.
