Open Mic Night Brings out TAMUK Talent

Music, Coffee, Fun

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) along with Student Engagement & Campus Life (SECL) teamed up to host Open Mic Night, an event for students to have an opportunity to showcase their singing skills and a chance to perform at the Homecoming bonfire.

“Open Mic Night is important to have because it allows students to express their creative musical talents to the community,” Sophia Yzagurrie, CAB public relations officer said. “Javelina Nation is full of talented individuals and we want to make sure their talents don’t go unnoticed.”

The night began with the ever-popular Tom’s Coffee Truck, which gave out free coffee to the attendees and then went on to have nine participants in the show. Many students gathered to watch their fellow peers sing their hearts out.

“I came to watch my boyfriend perform,” Bianca Arizmendi, one of the attendees, said. “I’m excited for everyone to hear his music.”

Arizmendi even brought a decorated sign to show her support.

“I saw the event being advertised on CAB’s Instagram and I wanted to see who would come,” Annette Vara said.

One of the first acts that performed, South 77, were very eager to let students see what they could do.

“I was shown a flyer in my Latin Jazz class and said ‘we should go,’” Sammy Guerra, steel guitarist for South 77, said.

The group had recently performed during Family Weekend and were excited to have another opportunity to perform and a chance to win a spot in the bonfire concert.

“We want everyone to know we’re still cranking out music,” Orly Zepeda, lead singer for South 77, added.

Later in the evening students chose the top three performers of the evening by voting. Grupo Vkro, Jada Renee and Devin Hines took the audience by storm and now have a spot in performing at the Homecoming bonfire
