Was the win earned or handed out?

In an intense penalty-shootout match held by The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, Mexico defeated Honduras leading many fans from both sides and me to be skeptical about the referee’s decisions. Many fans know matches are intended to last for 90 minutes and include extra time depending on how much time the referees think should be added to have a fair game. The referee for the Nov. 21 game indicated the game should be extended because of “attempted time-wasting.” The score was 2-1, Mexico on the verge of elimination and needed the extra minutes to come back. The game ended up continuing until the 101-minute mark, allowing Mexican player Edson Alvarez to tie the game leading to penalties. After having multiple incidents happen at penalty kicks as well, Honduras lost their direct qualification for the Copa America. Fans are upset, and I can understand why. I do think time wasting from the Honduras team should be punished, however nine minutes is unnecessarily long for extra time.  While I am not completely on board with this accusation, it is believed that the game is rigged to ensure Mexico’s qualification for greater monetization and consumerism of fans and viewers. As a born and raised Mexico fan, I am glad they took the win. I do however hope other countries get the same respect on and off the pitch for fairness of the game without having to worry about favorites and financial gain.
