Javelinas chase commitments

Stunt, cheer, welcomes 23 hoggies

Kickstarting a new journey from tumbling passes to tossing girls in the air, aspiring Javelinas jumped into commitments with Javelina Cheer and the new Javelina Stunt team at a recent recruitment event.

Two weeks into the spring semester on Jan. 27, Head Cheer Coach Molly Roach and Head Stunt Coach Lindsey Garcia provided a space in which athletes were allowed to showcase their skills for an evaluation.

“This is the first time I’ve seen current athletes, athletes are already committed, or want to commit. From what I have seen, they have real good potential,” Garcia said. “I’m excited to see where else we can go and take it.”

By 11:30 a.m. in the Health & Recreation center, 23 young women were signed onto the Stunt team.“There has been a really cool energy in the room with Stunt, it’s like inception. I think people are very excited for a new sport on campus and excited to be a part of an all-girl team,” Roach said.

Athletes had the chance to exhibit their tumbling passes and stunting skills while engaging in sole conversations with current members. Parents were also allowed in the gym and got to take pictures of their athletes adorned in Stunt gear.“Recruitment camps like this are very beneficial to our team. It is a lot less stressful than a tryout situation. You’re getting to connect with the possible recruits on one-on-one level,” Mylee Soliz, second year Javelina cheerleader, said.
