Students play to win groceries

Students hoped to secure some free essentials at the recent Grocery Bingo event co-hosted by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and Student Engagement.

The event aimed to provide students with a fun-filled evening with the chance to win essential groceries and gift cards.

The night kicked off with a raffle drawing for an HEB gift card, and soon it was time for the main event.

The prizes that were up for grabs ranged from pantry staples to reusable cups, catering to the diverse needs of the student body. Lucky winners celebrated their victories with cheers and applause, while others eagerly awaited their chance to shout “Bingo!”

“Finding cheap food is hard in times like this,” Samuel Cerda, a student in attendance, said.

Cerda also discussed a project he completed highlighting the Care Closet on campus and how the university can do more to help struggling students.

“Events like this will help a lot and bring the community in,” he added.

With the cost of food and living steadily on the rise, many students in attendance expressed their needs because of low budgets or food insecurity.

Aryn Ordonez, one of the winning students, was grateful for the event and the gift card she won for groceries.

“It will help a lot if we keep doing these events,” Ordonez said.

Ariel Hawkins, executive director for CAB, addressed the needs of the students.

“Usually, we do this in the beginning of the semester mainly because we know that students obviously are on a tight income or do not have that income to buy groceries,” Hawkins said.
