Maltais named CoSIDA Second Team All-America

AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Madeleine Maltais (Corpus Christi, Texas) added one more academic honor to her trophy case on Wednesday for the Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program as she was named Second Team Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in a release from the association.

With the distinction, Maltais becomes the first honoree from the Javelina track and field program since 2017 to be named CoSIDA Academic All-America when Bryce Martin was named second team. She is also the second Javelina ever to be named Academic All-America from the women’s program as she joins Susan Titzman who landed on the second team in 1987.

Overall, Maltais becomes the 31st Javelina in the history of CoSIDA to be named Academic All-America after Pablo Hernandez received the accolade for the baseball program after the 2019 season. She is also one of three honorees from the Lone Star Conference as she is joined by Nele Heinrich from West Texas A&M on the second team, while Valda Kabia, also from WT, was the lone first team selection from the league’s programs.

With a perfect 4.0 GPA while pursuing civil engineering during her career at TAMUK, Maltais is one of 24 to be named Academic All-America with a flawless GPA in either their undergraduate or graduate degree programs. Despite having her senior year cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Maltais still inked her name in the program’s record books in the javelin as she tallied a mark of 46.08m (151-2) at the 2019 David Noble Relays in San Angelo, Texas, to finish second with the top mark all-time in Javelina history. Her efforts during the season also saw her named Third Team All-LSC after she took third at the LSC Outdoor Championships with a toss of 44.05m (144-6).

She eventually earned a spot at the final site as she competed at the 2019 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium and finished 14th at her home site.
