TAMUK hosts Community Cross Country Night

Students, community showed up to race

On Friday, Nov. 10, the Sport Event and Facility Management course along with the department of health and kinesiology hosted their fifth cross country community race.

This race took place at the Outdoor Recreation Complex and saw an abundance of people participate in this race.

“The race went extremely well and the organization, layout and rewards were great as well as the weather,” kinesiology major Dylan Andrade said.

Andrade participated in the race before and has seen the changes that have occurred over time.

“The turnout of the race was one of the best we have ever had; this is a big step in the right direction for future events and giving people the best experience possible,” Andrade said.

With 90 participants across three races (1k, 3k and 5k), it is clear as time goes the race will gain popularity among students, staff and members of the community.

“We were very happy with the turnout considering the rainy weather,” Associate Professor and interim Associate Chair Dr. Brian Menaker said.

Another aspect that stood out was the amount of work that went into making this event as memorable as possible for those a part of it.

“Co-director and junior sport business student Marisol Guerrero made the awards in the DEC Makerspace and other students promoted the event in the Rec. Center and the Student Union Building as well as spending a total of five hours laying out the course on the days leading up to the race,” Menaker said.

This event not only impacted those who were involved in it but as well as the students who are currently enrolled and studying kinesiology and other majors related to it.

“This kind of event is great for the kinesiology department because it helps in getting people involved and interested in the department and possible get potential students to come in and study kinesiology here at TAMUK,” kinesiology student Patrick Krueger said.

The Kingsville Cross Country Community Race continues to cement itself as a tradition that is looked forward to every semester by many people both on and off campus.

The next race is set to take place on April 12, 2024, at the Outdoor Recreation Complex. For updates on these races check out the TAMUK running and walking events facebook page to lookout for more.
